Communication slow down after new machine / update

Let me first give the specifics:

Single Store operation - 3 machines using gigabit router

POS machine has the database resident - Win 7 Pro SP1  64 Bit, 4GB

Office machine - Win 8 Pro 64 Bit, 4GB - I3-2120

Receiving machine - Win XP Pro ver 2002 SP3, 512kb

Database has been "packed" - I think that's the term

Prior to using the POS as the database machine all machines were using Win XP Pro.  System was relatively fast accessing data from all machines.  Now that we have changed the machines to various Win versions and put the database on the POS system, the system has slowed down immensely.  For the non POS machines to enter purchase orders, access item data, etc. you will be watching the "spinning circle" between each entry.  Also, we have found that if entering a purchase order on the office machine and a sale is tendered on the POS, the entry position will jump to the first item on the purchase order.  We have even had an item that was just sold on the POS show up on the purchase order being entered for a different vendor than the item just sold.  In addition to the slowing down, we have seen quite often that the supplier cost will revert back to an older cost after changing it the day before.

I'm not a super tech head and we have a Microsoft Partner but we can't seem to solve the problems.  At first we thought because one machine was using Win 7 Home it slowed down and therefore upgraded to Win 8 Pro.  Maybe helping a little but it doesn't explain the problem with the Win XP machine.

Anyone had the same problems?  Our Partner is great to work with but this is very frustrating to deal with during a very busy time of year.  Looking for ideas to forward to our Partner.
